Castellated nuts, aka castle nuts are locking devices. These nuts have slots cut into one end and are often used in conjunction with a cotter pin. The slots accommodate the cotter pin when used with a drilled shank fastener. The castle and slotted styles are interchangeable dependent on the desired design. Common applications include automotive repairs.
